“8 parts of speech”, I think I need to know 8 parts of speech if I want to learn English.
As I’m beginner, I may not know the definitions of all of them. But it is good to take note of them.
They are :
nouns
pronouns
verbs
adverbs
adjectives
propositions
conjunctions
interjections.
I am familiar with nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs adjectives and propositions. But I’m not so sure what are conjunctions and interjections. Ok, I’ll learn about them in details later. First I’ll quickly look at nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives.
Nouns
I know what noun is. It refers to a person, an animal, a place, an object, a state, an event, a feeling or an abstract idea.
For example :
man, woman, boy, girl,
dog, cat, bird,
park, mall, house, school, market,
book, cup, ball, doll,
advice, anger, beauty and happiness etc.
Oh, well, I know pretty much about noun. Actually, I still don’t know all types of nouns.
Pronouns
I thought Pronoun is easier than nouns for me because it only has a few words to take note. But I was wrong. It also has different types of pronouns. We use pronoun as a replacement of a noun or a noun phrase when we don’t want to repeat this noun. We can say, it takes the place of noun.
For example :
I, You, He, She, It, We, They
me, you, him, her, it, us, them
myself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, themselves
Who, What, Which
This, That, These, Those
Verbs
We use verbs when we want to express actions. It is essential for a complete sentence.
We need to learn different types and tenses of verbs in order to express different actions happening in different time. Since this is just the brief definition of Verbs, I just want to list down some examples first. We can learn different types of verbs and tenses gradually.
You can find the base form of verbs in dictionary. Every verb has its own base form and the verbs you can find in the dictionary are all in base form. Of course, the dictionary does include different tenses of this particular verb and usages.
For Example : walk, go, run, eat, sleep, listen, speak
Adverbs
Adverb is a describing word and it describes verb normally. But it can describe noun, pronoun, verb, adverb, adjective, phrase and sentence. It can tell you where, when, how, why and to what extent something happens. There are several types of adverbs. Some adverbs are formed from adjectives or nouns by adding suffix –ly. But not all adverbs end with –ly.
For Example : slowly, fast, quickly, often
Adjectives
Adjective is a describing word as well. But it mainly describes noun and pronoun. As usual, it also has different types.
Example : good, pretty, happy, big, small, tall, long, old, young, blue, black, red.
I think it is quite enough for this week.
Oh, I forgot to tell you about me.
I’m a happy housewife. My skin is white. And I don’t have a bike.
My friends always tell me that I’m nice.
It sounds like a poem, isn’t it? Ok, I need to take a break. Happy Learning!
